The DNA of FBCO

Jesus Centered

• We believe that Jesus is at the center of everything we do. Therefore, we will keep the focus on Jesus, not secondary topics.

Rooted in Scripture

• We believe the Bible is the final authority for every matter or issue for individuals, families, and the church. It is essential that Christians not only learn about the Bible, but memorize scripture and be “prepared to give a reason for the hope we have in Christ.”

Committed to Families

• We believe that God created families to model all human relationships and ordained marriage between a man and a women. The church will make every effort to be a resource to families and marriages as well as to those who are not married to develop Godly, healthy relationships.

A Haven of Grace

• We believe that God’s grace is at the heart of the gospel. Because God extends his grace to us, we extend grace to others.

Missional: Local and Global

• We believe that it is our Biblical mandate to be “on mission” for Jesus. We fulfill that mission by engaging our culture both in East Alabama and around the world for the purpose of sharing the gospel message.

The Essentials We Believe

About God

God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three personalities: Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God. (Gen. 1:1, 26, 27, 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Matt. 28:19; I Peter 1:2; II Cor. 13:14)

About Jesus Christ

Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, completely God and human flesh. He lived a sinless life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins off all people by dying on a cross. He bodily arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven’s glory and will bodily return again someday to earth to reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. (John 1:1-4; Matt. 1:22,23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1ff, 14:10-30)

About the Holy Spirit

God as Spirit, in fellowship with us today, makes us aware of our need for Jesus Christ. He lives in every believer’s heart from the moment of salvation. He provides believers power for living, understanding of spiritual truths, and guidance in doing what is right. He gives every believer spiritual gifts for the purpose of bringing honor and glory to God and to bring others into faith in Jesus Christ. (II Cor. 3:17; John 16:7-13, 16:17; Acts 1:8)

About the Bible

The Bible is God’s Word to us. It was written by human authors under the supernatural inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is the truth without any mixture of error. (II Timothy 3:16; II Peter 1:20-21; II Timothy 1:13; Proverbs 30:5)

About Human Beings

People are made in the spiritual image of God, to be like Him in character. People are the supreme object of God’s creation. Though every person has a tremendous potential for good, each person has fallen and come short of the glory of God, which is called sin. (Gen. 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6; Romans 3:23; Isaiah 59:1-2)

About Family

Family is God’s plan for spiritual growth. The health of family is a priority of FBCO as is the health of all marriages. We believe all marriages must be Biblical, i.e one man and one woman for life. (Genesis 2:19-24; Ephesians 5:22-33)

About Salvation

Salvation is a free gift offered by grace and accepted through faith. We can never earn salvation – this free gift. Eternal life comes through faith in Christ, not by our good works. Salvation is only available through Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 2:8-9; Romans 6:23; John 3:16; John 14:6)

About Eternal Security

The true believer is secure in salvation for eternity. One cannot “lose” one’s salvation. It is maintained by the grace and power of God, not by the efforts of the believer.

(John 6:39; Philippians 1:6; I John 5:12; John 10:29; I Peter 1:3-5)

About Eternity

People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God (hell), or eternally with God (heaven). Heaven and hell are real places of eternal existence. (John 3:16; John 2:25; John 5:11-13;  Revelation 20:15; Matt. 1:8)

About the Church

The Church is the Bride of Christ. Not a group of buildings, but a group of people, a Family of faith with different backgrounds and struggles, called out to be the earthly expression of the life and work of Christ. We believe in the Priesthood of belivers, where all members are ministers. We believe in brotherly love, honoring one another, and receiving one another. We need to receive and give grace. We find strength in diversity based on unity in Christ. We are called to global missions.(Ephesians 4:11-16; I Peter 2:9; Romans 12:10; Romans 15:7; I Corinthians 12:14)

The Local Church

The Bible is our sole authority (II Timothy 3:15), the local church is completely autonomous (Col. 1:18), and every believer is a priest (I Peter 2:9). Believers should be tithers (Lev. 26:30), baptism is by immersion (Col. 2:12), our lives are Spirit directed (John 15:5) and we are mandated to tell others about Christ (I Peter 3:15)
